![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() CLIMBING TEAM Ridgway/Ouray CLIMBING TEAM The 2011-2012 Climbing Team season is here. We are very excited to have 2 teams this year- a middle and a high school team. Also, the climbing team has gained school recognition as a sport. This allows students to earn credit for participation, achieve varsity status, and attend the Sports Banquet. While the general structure is still the same, it is great for the students to achieve school district recognition and support. Information from 2010-2011 Climbing Team The JV Girls Climbing Team - Kalyn, Cassidy, Alma, and Lauren - won 1st place in the Female Team category at States in CO Springs on February 25. Sam won 1st Place in the JV Individual Male Category (see picture below). Nolan and Jon competed well in the JV category as well. In Varsity, Heather placed 15th out of 35 competitors. As a sophmore, Heather's finish was quite impressive. Oliver and Hayden placed 16th and 34th out of 58 males in the Varsity Male category. All of the students did great and had fun competing against athletes throughout the state. The High School climbing team did great at the Western Slope Regionals held at the Grand Junction Climbing Center on February 12, 2011. Hayden, Oliver, and Heather all qualified for the Varsity State competition to be held on February 26 in Colorado Springs. In the JV category, Sam and Nolan placed 1st and 3rd respectively in Male; Alma and Lauren placed 1st and 2nd in female. Sam, Nolan, Jon, Alma, Lauren, Kalyn, and Cassidy all qualified for the JV State competition to be held on February 25 in Colorado Springs. Good luck! The 1st Annual Ridgway Climbing Competition on January 29, 2011 was a huge success. With 60 climbers from 5 schools, the western slope was well represented. Athletes competed using both boulder and toprope routes. The Ridgway-Ouray team competed strongly with Oliver Hagemeyer finishing 5th in Advanced Male, Lauren Gleason and Kalyn Hunter finishing 1st and 3rd respectively in Beginner Female. The Middle School team did great with Jonny Zaugg, Ryan Yocum, and Micah Smith finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Haley Burgess and Isabella Greischel tied for 2nd with Kianna Ziemann coming in 3rd. Roughly 15 community members assisted in the competition. Volunteers set the routes, belayed the athletes, and ran the concession stand. Thank you to all who helped make this event successful and fun. We are now practicing at the NEW wall at RSS. This 40 foot tall wall, complete with overhangs and roofs has been a great addition for the team! The Middle and High School teams had a strong showing at the Grand Junction competition on January 8. In the Middle School Division, Haley, Isabella, and Alexis placed 1st 2nd and 3rd respectively in Recreational Female. Patrick and Ryan placed 1st and 2nd in Recreational Male. In the High School Division, Oliver placed 3rd in Intermediate Male. All participants had the opportunity to both boulder and toprope. The High School team had a great time at the Glenwood competition on December 3. With roughly 60 other high school climbers competing, it was tough. Hayden finished 3rd in Intermediate Male and Alsace finished 3rd in Beginner Female. Thus far, we have had 7 different climbers on our team place in a competition. Both the Middle and High School teams competed in Montrose on November 20. Our team did great with Sam coming in 2nd in the Intermediate Male category, Heather 3rd in Intermediate Female, and Lauren 2nd in Recreational Female. The Middle School team had to compete against the high schools. Several middle school youth had impressive finishes with Kianna and Ryan each finishing 4th in Recreational Female and Male categories. Everyone on the team climbed well and did a great job supporting each other. The high school team did great at their first competition on November 13 in Grand Junction. Oliver placed 2nd in the Advanced Male category. Nolan placed 1st in the Recreational Male category. Heather placed 3rd in the Intermediate Female category.
